Getting Away From It All - The Real Secret!

I went to one of those fun little business and marketing shows a couple of weeks back.  You know the type where a number of local businesses set up small booths and display their wares and services to the general public.  And there was the inevitable network marketing businesses present as well of course.  These little fairs are great places to find out what’s going on in the market and who has come up with a new angle on things.

As I approached one booth I heard a network marketing type talking to a young woman about the nutritional product he represented.  It was quite a pitch.  According to this fellow, his little tonic would prevent everything from colds to being vertically challenged.  It was quite a presentation all in all.  And then, he said something that I thought was the deal killer.  The prospect asked if people could buy his product on the internet.  His response was, "Yes, people can buy it from you on the internet, but you don’t want them to, you want them to buy it directly from you, because you make more money on each bottle."

I have to tell you that I am surprised at how self-limiting this fellow was in his approach to marketing.  Let’s say for example that by selling that product one on one to customers he can make $10 more per bottle.  So, how many bottles does he have to sell for him to make a decent living?  Quite a few!  If he wants a six figure income, which is what his company was espousing, then he has to peddle nearly 1,000 bottles a month to his personal customers.  Does he know 1,000 people a month who will buy his product?  Does he have the time to run around town and deliver 1,000 bottles a month to his customers?  And even if he could, when will he have five minutes in the day for anything else?  And that’s everyday!

Think of it.  He can’t take a day off, go on vacation, or make a business trip without affecting his personal sales.  He is doing the very thing that he said he didn’t want to do when he started his network marketing business to begin with.  He is setting himself up so that he can never get away from his business.

The standard network marketing response to this little scenario of course, is that he is suppose to build a downline network that does all this for him.  I understand that.  Now, be honest with me and yourself here.  When is the last time you saw a downline that didn’t need constant care and attention?  A downline is a marvelous thing, and we all want lots of productive people in our organization, but downlines take nurturing and constant work for them to stay productive.

The question then becomes, how do you operate a network marketing business, or any business really, so that you can get away from that business when you want to do so.  The answer is simple.  Ready?  You have to expand your sphere of marketing and influence beyond what you or your downline can do personally.  You have to build a business that only needs your personal attention from one aspect in order for it to provide the income you want and continue to provide that income when you are not directly working it.  Here’s another way to look at it.  A CEO of a major corporation is most effective when he is only doing his job. He does not try to be the management, the sales department, the service department or the accounting department.  He is most effective and makes the most money because he concentrates on one aspect of running the company.  Not trying to do everything.  And this is a huge downfall for most network marketing people.  They try to sell the products, recruit downlines, deliver product.. on and on!  Take a lesson from the CEO here.

My friend Bob is a good example for us all to follow.  Bob spends about five hours a week expanding his product influence or presence on the internet.  He does this from the comfort of his home, and not by running around delivering product or by trying to recruit people into his business.  By making sure he has an ever expanding internet marketing plan, he estimates that he reaches approximately 3,000 to 5,000 new people everyday with his product message.  Bob’s income has exceeded his expectations by over 50% within the first year, and since his business is product sales based, the re-orders keep his business building constantly.

Moreover, Bob can get away.  If he takes a vacation to Hawaii, he makes sales even while he’s sitting on the beach or having a Mai-Tai in the cabana.  The company provides the packaged collection and delivery vehicle for his products, so all he has to do is make folks aware of the benefits of his rather unique product line.  He also uses an automatic prospect and follow-up system to insure that no-one falls through the cracks.  Each and every prospective downline candidate is assured of getting all the information they need to make a decision.

When you are setting up your business, remember this golden rule.  You can own a business or you can simply own a job.  Think about it!  You don’t want to own a business that you can not get away from anytime you want to do so.  This has been the downfall of too many people in business; they set things up so that the business can not run without them.  That, my friends, is owning a job, not owning a business.
